Long-running adventure comic strip Steve Canyon, written and drawn by creator Milton Caniff, ran from 1947-1988. The Reuben Award-winning series starred a veteran running his own air-transport business. During the Korean war, Canyon returned to the U.S. Air Force, and stayed in the military for the remainder of the series.

Caniff first made a name on Terry & The Pirates, launched in 1934. However, that series was owned by the syndicate that distributed it -- so the cartoonist left the high-profile gig to launch Steve Canyon in 1947. Notes Toonopedia, "Canyon was, from the start, a superb and highly popular adventure strip. Instead of looking backward, trying to repeat his earlier success, Caniff constructed a thoroughly modern, postwar scenario, complete with a mature hero who had gained adventuring experience during World War II."
